Tarr Steps Spanning the River Bane, deep in the heart of Exmoor, you will find the ancient and mystical Tarr Steps. Considered to be medieval by some and prehistoric by others, these massive slabs of gritstone - some weighing over five tons have provided a safe crossing for centuries. South Molton
South Molton has the Quince Honey Farm, west of the town centre. Through glass screens visitors can observe the world of the honey bee.
The Town Hall where the museum is housed on the ground floor. This holds an excellent collection of pewter and a comprehensive history of mining on Exmoor. The museum is open Mid-March to November except for Sundays and Mondays. Entry is free.
Visit the village of Chittlehampton to see the parish church. Nearby is St Urith’s Well, dedicated to the Saxon Lady Urith, who was slain by local heathens. The well is said to have sprung from the ground where she fell. She later was named St Hierithra.
South Molton also has a covered pannier market and an elegant Old Market House with a fine view of the Square. The town has become well known as a centre for antiques and also for its annual sheep market, which takes place in August and dates back to 1357.
A little further afield is the Cobbaton Combat Museum, open from April to October, seven days a week and by appointment out of season. It is situated between Chittlehampton and Umberleigh. The museum has many interesting tanks and weapons and vehicles dating from the Second World War.
