- Holsworthy Devon is a
busy market town serving large area of rural Devon. Standing
in the centre of an underdeveloped part of the region, an ancient
bleak landscape of narrow lanes and rolling hills with isolated
farms, and hamlets with old cottages.
- A plaque commemorating the great tree of
Holsworthy stands at the corner of Friars Street, from which a Royal
Charter was given in 1154 for the annual proclamation of St.Peters
Fair held in July.
- The pretty Maid Ceremony is another custom
associated with Holsworthy.
In 1841 a sum of money was left so that a single local woman under
the age of 30, pretty, quiet with good attendance at church, could be
given a small financial reward.
