- The town of Totnes, has strayed out of the girdle of its old enclosure of wall and town and wandered down to the bank of the lovely river, but by this rambling it has not lost the shape or aspect of a fortified town, for the first sight that strikes a visitor who has crossed the bridge and sets foot in Fore Street, is the arch of Eastgate, spanning the steep roadway half way up the bill, testifying to the old importance of the place. And when
he passes through the gateway he will find a town whose house fronts still bear witness to that fine taste in architecture and carving which distinguished English merchants three. centuries ago.
-
- Totnes is a charming town built steeply above the River
Dart. It has been a borough for 1,000 years. From the castle,
with the remains of some walls still standing, you can look down on the Elizabethan and
17th-century houses in the High Street.
-
- The town boasts two
railway stations, one on the Penzance to London Main Line and the
other on the Preserved Dart Valley Line to Buckfastleigh.
