Paignton, once a rural village whose surrounding fertile soil produced abundant crops.
The natural wealth in the area permitted the establishment of wealthy estates. During the 1800s the arrival of the railway permitted the development
of the town as a holiday resort, which it enjoys to this day.
On the outskirts
of the town of the A385 Totnes road lies Paignton Zoo, a zoological garden
developed in Victorian times but in recent years redeveloped and improved
on modern lines with more consideration to the needs of the animals.
The town centre houses the eastern terminus of the privately owned steam railway between Paignton and Kingswear with regular services
in the summer months.
