reed warblers and sedge warblers along the reed beds as some
will be noisily establishing their territory.
Spring flowers such as red campion and the dainty
stitchworts will provide colour and interest and we should
see small tortoiseshell and brimstone butterflies.

NEW FOR 2012 Clovelly Folk Festival. Saturday 5 May - Sunday
6 May. Location Throughout the village. The picturesque
village of Clovelly in North Devon will stage its first folk
festival over the weekend of 5th and 6th May. Folk music in
Devon has undergone a massive revival recently. Live music
invites participation; it binds communities and brings new
sound and colour to people's lives in a time of austerity.
The Clovelly Folk Festival aims to do just that. This is a
festival which locates traditional music in a traditional
village, little changed in hundreds of years and will
provide a spring time spectacle for all. Tickets: Adults
£15; families (2A+2C) £35. Tickets available from The Plough
Arts Centre Box office on 01805 624624 For programme

EARLY MORNING WALK ALONG THE RIVER OTTER WITH THE RSPB. Join
us and marvel at the sights and sounds of spring in the
Otter valley.
We could see residential kingfishers and we'll keep an eye
out for birds of prey such as kestrels, peregrines and
buzzards. We will also look for migrant warblers, such as
reed warblers and sedge warblers along the reed beds as some
will be noisily establishing their territory.
Spring flowers such as red campion and the dainty
stitchworts will provide colour and interest and we should
see small tortoiseshell and brimstone butterflies.
LEAVING AT 7 am, we walk from Otterton Mill to White Bridge
and back again along different sides of the river, to finish
with a scrumptious Otterton Mill breakfast at 10 am. Price
includes breakfast. Booking essential. Otterton Mill,

Plymouth Philharmonic Choir to bring down the Final
Curtain on Armed Forces Week with a little help from The
Domestic Diva
The honour of marking the end of this summer’s Armed Forces
Week has been awarded to Plymouth Philharmonic Choir. The
150-strong choir and 50-piece orchestra have been asked to
put on a special performance of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man,
the most performed work by a living composer in the world
today, and certainly a favourite with the Choir’s local
audience.
The piece charts the growing menace of a descent into war,
interspersed with moments of reflection. It shows the horror
of conflict, and ends with the hope for peace in a new
millennium, when sorrow, pain and death can be overcome.
Perhaps one of the reasons The Armed Man resonates so
profoundly with people in the South West is because there
can be few individuals or families whose own lives have not
been affected by war and bloody conflict, and when listening
to this touching, at times terrifying, music, powerful
memories are re-kindled.
The Armed Man features a soprano soloist and bringing more
than a touch of glamour to the occasion is the stunningly
beautiful and exquisitely voiced Juliette Pochin, also known
as The Domestic Diva. Her recording and concert career has
led her to work with many of the world’s greatest orchestras
and she has shared a stage with fellow musicians as
wide-ranging as Simon Rattle and Meatloaf (on ITV’s Popstar
to Opera Star). Juliette’s voice can also be heard on the
soundtrack albums of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and
Star Wars. Clearly the Guildhall audience is in for a real
treat. Juliette says she is delighted to be performing in
the city.
Conductor Christopher Fletcher is also including in the
musical programme Andrew Carter’s Horizons and, as befits
this Diamond Jubilee year, Sir William Walton’s Coronation
Te Deum.
The concert is taking place on Sunday 1st July, at 7:30pm at
Plymouth Guildhall.

fields and ancient woodland. An abundance of ideas, fun,
food and friends.
The outdoor festival has long been a celebrated part of
British summer. In our increasingly commercial world, many
people are now rediscovering the joys and benefits of more
local, less crowded and blessedly sponsor-free events. Trill
Summer Festival is one of this new breed of unashamedly
small and non-commercial events, its heart firmly rooted in
the native, natural pleasures to be found in its immediate
surroundings. Each day of the Festival offers a host of
activities ranging from inspiring speakers and creative
workshops to outdoor adventures and marvellous music.
There'll be a strong focus on biodiversity, sustainability,
eco-energy, environment and local food. And, as you would
expect from an organic farm with its own chef in residence,
the food is superb... delicious and nutritious,
wild-harvested, from the farm or locally sourced. If this
all sounds a bit too civilized for the more seasoned
festival-goer, fear not. Come sundown, special guests will
bring each day to a rousing, celebratory end with music,
dancing and other nocturnal delights.

Orchard, Killerton, Budlake, Exeter, Devon. EX5 3LE 11am

National Trust members free. Adult £2 Child £1 Family £5
Tel: 01392 881 345
On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October, we are hosting a
two day National Apple Day celebration in our orchard.
Join us to celebrate the coming of autumn
There is a long history of cider-making on the Killerton
estate and we are passionate about conserving our
orchards and keeping this heritage alive. Orchards and
old English apple varieties are in decline and our
National Apple Day event will highlight the importance
of protecting them for both wildlife and the Devon
landscape.
We care for over 50 acres of traditional orchards.
Nearly 100 varieties of old English apple are grown here
at Killerton, including the Killerton Sweet and the
Killerton Sharp which are unique and originate from our
2,400 acre farming estate. Peek behind the scenes
You can follow the orchard discovery trail to witness
our 200 year old giant cider press in action, see where
we keep our beehives, try the traditional craft of
barrel-making with one of the UKs last remaining Coopers
and have a go at woodturning using Killerton’s apple
wood. Bring your own apples. Bring along a bag of your
own garden apples to the event to mill and press into a
bottle of juice to take home and on Sunday meet an apple
ID expert who will help identify varieties of visitor’s
home-grown cider apples. Stalls will be selling English
apple trees, cider making equipment and books.
Children will be buzzing. For our younger visitors there
are village fete games to play, apple face painting and
a Bumble Bee March through the orchard. Wet your
appetite. The Killerton Kitchen food tent will serving
up hog roast with home made apple sauce, autumnal mulled
cider and apple juice and vegetarian options. Sit back
and enjoy a picnic lunch amongst the apple trees with
live music, apple-juggling, apple folklore talks and a
medieval Mummers Play to bless the orchard.
